The Bureau of Justice statistices works to collect, analyze, publish, and disseminate information on crime, criminal offenders, victims of crime, and the operation of justice systems at all levels of government. These data are critical to federal, state, and local policymakers in combating crime and ensuring that justice is both efficient and evenhanded.

The FBI regularly publishes or contributes to a series of statistical crime reports and publications, detailing specific offenses and outlining trends that can help you better understand crime threats both nationally and locally.

The statistical overviews represent a snapshot of recent findings about the status of crime in the United States. Data is drawn largely from two national, annual reports--the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report (UCR) and the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)--which measure the scope, magnitude, and impact of crime in the United States.

The OJJDP Statistical Briefing Book (SBB) enables users to access online information via OJJDP's website to learn more about juvenile crime and victimization and about youth involved in the juvenile justice system. Developed for OJJDP by the National Center for Juvenile Justice, SBB provides timely and reliable statistical answers to the most frequently asked questions from policymakers, the media, and the general public. In addition, the data analysis and dissemination tools available through SBB give users quick and easy access to detailed statistics on a variety of juvenile justice topics.

The Crime Data Explorer (CDE) is the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program's dynamic solution to presenting crime data. The CDE pages provide a view of estimated national and state data, reported agency-level crime statistics, and graphs of specific variables from the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). You can also download bulk datasets from a variety of UCR topics. In addition, the Crime Data API (application programming interface) provides a way for developers to access and share large amounts of data.

Forum on child and family statistics. A working group of 23 Federal agencies, the Forum fosters coordination, collaboration, and integration of Federal efforts to collect, analyze, and report data on conditions and trends related to child and family well-being

The U.S. Census Bureau conducts reimbursable projects for the two U.S. Department of Justice agencies: Bureau of Justice Statistics and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The U.S. Census Bureau acts as a data collection agent to provide statistical data on a range of topics including probation, parole, inmate sexual violence, inmate deaths, criminal justice expenditures, and a variety of facility data.

Once the data are provided to the U.S. Department of Justice, it is used for a wide range of purposes including research, evaluation, policy development, legislative action, program creation, and funding allotment as well as other processes
