Strategies & tips for locating resources for your research project

Finding Sources for Your Research Assignment

Professors Findling and McFall require you to have:

  • a minimum of 8 separate sources in addition to whatever readings you are using from the course
    • these may include Internet sources but should also reflect research done using Dugan Library resources
  • your paper should be 10-15 pages long (approximately 3,000--4,500 words)

Some deadlines to keep in mind:

  1. submit your topic (a brief descriptions of the issue or question you want to investigate--no more than 1/2 a page) for approval by Sunnday, February 26
  2. you must submit a thesis statement and brief outline of your argument, along with a preliminary bibliography by Sunday March 26
  3. you may submit a rough draft of your paper no later than Sunday April 23 **optional**
  4. you must submit a final copy of your paper no later than Friday, May 5 (Scholar's Day)

It's always wise to collect more than what you think you will need. This is especially true if you have to rely on interlibrary loan (borrowing from other libraries) and don't have the book or full text article to consult immediately.

The information on this guide will help you to discover different types of resources.  Please ask your instructor or one of our librarians for help if you have difficulty using the sources or you just don't know what else to try!  We'd be very happy to work with you to discover the sources you need!
